Why I Joined RentReporters:

Before I came to the United States, I understood little about credit. I knew the basics, like you needed to have a good credit score if you wanted to buy a home.

As one of the millions with a low credit score, I did not have access to what many people may take for granted – like having a “regular” or an unsecured credit card. I was repeatedly denied when I applied for a credit card, and I even went to a local bank to see what my options were. I was told that I would first have to have a managed account with them, and after one year, I might qualify for a credit card.

I felt limited. For instance, going shopping meant that I had to have cash to buy what I needed, so I could only purchase the basic necessities. Additionally, because of my low credit score, I knew that I would not be approved for a good loan to buy a home or a car. I became increasingly frustrated with my attempts to gain access to credit and improve my credit score. I wanted to give up – even with getting something as basic as a credit card.

Then, I heard about RentReporters. I never knew that reporting my on-time rent payments could help me improve my credit score. So, I signed up, and in one week, my score increased by 30 points!
