After my divorce, my credit score went down to the low 600s, and because of my low score, life became difficult. I was denied loans and credit cards. My car insurance rates doubled, and I had a difficult time getting approved to rent an apartment. I quickly learned that if you don’t have credit, you don’t have anything.

Until I was in a situation where I couldn’t get access to credit did I truly understand that having a low credit score could hurt you. Everyone looks at your credit score when you’re applying for something, and that can negatively impact a person’s life. And what was frustrating is that it didn’t matter that I have a job and make good money. Bottom line, I had a low credit score, and that’s all that mattered.
I tried to improve my credit score on my own by pigging back off other trade lines. I also opened up secured credit cards, but these efforts had minimal impact on my credit score.
